Free smoke alarm alerts neighbours in Denbigh

Posted

A Denbigh woman had a lucky escape from a fire in her home after smoke alarms fitted by firefighters activated and alerted her neighbour in the early hours of this morning.

Crews from Denbigh and St Asaph were called to the property onHenllan Street, Denbigh at 04: 11hrs this morning, Friday August 3 by neighbours who heard the smoke alarm siren.

The alarms were activated by cooking left unattended.

The neighbour also alerted the occupant, who removed the cooking from the heat.

The smoke alarms were fitted by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service as part of their free home fire safety check.

Bob Masonfrom North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "This incident once again highlights how smoke alarm can save lives. If this smoke alarm had not activated and alerted the neighbour, a serious fire could easily have broken out.

"We urge people not to leave their cooking unattended, not even for a moment, and for  anyone who hears a smoke alarm to make their way out of the building - to get out , stay out and call the emergency services.

"The occupant was very fortunate that her neighbour heard the alarm and acted as they did - I'd like to commend him for contacting the fire and rescue service immediately and for helping to protect his neighbour in this way..

"To safeguard the lives of your loved ones, we are urging everyone to take advantage of our free home fire safety checks. A member of the Service will come to your home, undertakes a fire safety assessment, and if necessary, fit a new smoke alarm free of change.

"There checks are totally free of charge and available for all residents inNorth Wales. If you have a friend, family or neighbour who you feel could benefit from a check, tell them about what we can do and send us their details. Saving their life is the best gift you could ever give."
