Students get the recipe for safe cooking

Posted

Local firefighters have been visiting kitchens atBangorUniversity's halls of residence over recent weeks to ensure students cook safely.

The latest phase of the student safety campaign saw North Wales Fire and Rescue staff working in partnership withBangorUniversitythrough a series of visits to talk to students at various halls about the dangers of leaving cooking unattended and of cooking after drinking.

They also took the opportunity to talk to the students about how they could help to drive down false alarms at the University.

Eilian Roberts, Watch Manager, Blue Watch Bangor explained, said: "We've talked to over 2000 students about cooking safety and gave hints and tips to keep them safe. We've also been giving advice on how to avoid false alarms at the halls of residence - we've been working in partnership with both universities on this issue for a number of years and we've seen lots of progress.

"In addition, next month we'll be targeting students in private accommodation, knocking on their doors to offer free home fire safety checks to help keep them as safe as possible.

"Many of these young people are living away from home and their parents for the first time and are potentially very vulnerable.
