Fire in River Lane Industrial Estate, SaltneyPosted
Crews were called to a fire in a building on River Lane Industrial Estate, Saltney at 08.08am on Tuesday 20th May.
Two appliances from Deeside, two from Cheshire and one from Flint, along with the Ariel Ladder Platform from Wrexham, the High Volume Pump from Llandudno and the Incident Command Unit from Rhyl were in attendance at the height of the incident.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service still have crews at working at the incident. The fire involved tonnes of recycled waste which resulted in black smoke being visible in the area.
Dave Powell for Natural Resources Wales, said: "Our officers are on site to assist the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and assess the potential impact of this incident on the environment.
"Our biggest concern in incidents such as this is dealing with the water that's used to fight the blaze. It picks up a lot of pollutants from the burning material and can cause a lot of damage if it gets into streams and rivers.
"At present the pollution appears to be contained and there is minimal impact on the River Dee and surrounding area."
Public Health Wales has advised that it does not expect people living near to the fire to be exposed to smoke at levels that pose an elevated health risk. If smoke is apparent at ground level, people are advised to seek shelter by staying indoors and closing doors and windows and listening out for any media messages updating on the situation.
Smoke may contain substances that can irritate the lining of the air passages and the skin. Respiratory symptoms can include coughing and wheezing and breathlessness. People with asthma and other respiratory conditions may be more susceptible to smoke and should carry and use their medication (such as their inhalers) as usual.
Public Health Wales is not aware of any reports of anyone experiencing ill effects from this fire. Anyone with respiratory symptoms who is concerned should contact NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47 or their GP.
