Wildfire update
PostedThe recent spell of dry, fine weather has resulted in an exceptionally busy time for staff tackling wildfires across Wales over recent weeks.
Dawn Docx, Chief Fire Officer at North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is thanking staff and appealing to our communities to help prevent uncontrolled fires.
She said:
“In North Wales, our fire crews have attended over 170 grass and gorse fires since January, with over 40 classed as wildfires. Many of these wildfires have required multiple crews and officer attendance for hours at a time.
“Our control room staff have also dealt with a significant increase in calls, dealing with both notifications of controlled burning and calls from members of the public reporting these often very visual fires.
“My heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved for their professionalism and dedication.
“We're continuing to share important messaging around when burning should take place, and sharing safety messaging about how to prevent grass and gorse fires through the WildfireWise campaign.
“Help stop wildfires - don’t light campfires, and only use a BBQ where signs say you can. Never leave the BBQ unattended, and ensure that it is fully extinguished before you leave. Clear away bottles, glasses, and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
“We’re also reminding landowners that Heather and grass burning with a Burn Plan ended on 15th March (31st March in Upland areas). Anyone found burning outside of the Burn Plan Period (Nov to March) will be prosecuted and it could affect their single farm payments from Welsh Government.
“In addition, I’d appeal for anyone with any information on deliberate fires call CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
“If you do see a wildfire, get to safe place, call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service.
“Taking extra care and adhering to these regulations is crucial for preventing uncontrolled fires and protecting our communities.”
