Electric Blanket Safety
Electric blankets are one of the leading causes of bedroom fires, particularly for older people. Following a few simple rules can significantly reduce the risk.
Before you use it
Check your blanket for:
- Scorch marks or burns.
- Fraying fabric or exposed wires.
- Damp or water damage.
- Mould or discolouration.
If you spot any of these, stop using the blanket immediately and replace it.
Using it safely
- Always follow the manufacturer's instructions. Some blankets are designed to be left on overnight, others are not.
- Never use a hot water bottle in bed at the same time as an electric blanket.
- Replace your blanket in line with the manufacturer's guidance, if you don't know how old it is or have lost the instructions, replace it.
- Only buy blankets that carry the BEAB Approved mark or a British Standard Kitemark.
- Never buy second-hand. You cannot know the blanket's history or condition.
Storing It
- Store flat or loosely rolled, never fold it, as this damages the internal wiring.
- Keep it dry and away from damp areas.
