Chimney fires
Regular chimney maintenance is essential to help prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Before the colder months arrive, make sure your chimney and flue are clean, safe and ready to use.
Stay safe
- Have your chimney and flue swept regularly.
- Burn only dry, seasoned wood with a moisture content of 17% or less.
- Fully extinguish embers before going to bed.
- Always use a fire guard to protect against sparks.
- Test your smoke alarms regularly and make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm.
How often should your chimney be swept?
Fuel Type | Recommended Frequency |
Oil | Once a year |
Gas | Once a year |
Smokeless coal | At least once a year |
Bituminous coal | Twice a year |
Wood | Up to four times a year |
Common causes of chimney fires
- Burning wet or unseasoned wood.
- Infrequent chimney sweeping.
- Allowing fires to smoulder for long periods.
- Using a stove or appliance that is too large for the room.
Reduce the risk
Burn your stove hot enough to maintain a steady flame and avoid prolonged smouldering, as this can lead to a build-up of highly flammable creosote inside the chimney.
Before each heating season, have your chimney professionally cleaned and inspected to ensure it is free from blockages and in good working order.
For peace of mind, always use a qualified chimney sweep, such as one certified by the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS).
